Meet the YAT

SMARTRISK No Regrets Youth Advisory Team

SMARTRISK created the SMARTRISK No Regrets Youth Advisory Team in June 2009 to help shape SMARTRISK No Regrets Online and to offer SMARTRISK advice in other areas of youth programming (e.g., branded promotional items). The YAT is now in its second year, welcoming two new members to join three returning members.

Meet the 2010/2011 Youth Advisory Team:

Brandon

Upper Kennetcook, Nova Scotia

Brandon is one of two returning members to the Youth Advisory Team, having first joined the YAT in September of 2009 after one year of being a part of his No Regrets team at his high school. Now in Grade 12, Brandon enjoys swimming, tennis, baseball, playing video games and music. He is also an avid fan of the French language and all else that is French. The issue of injury is important to Brandon because of his personal experiences and his desire to be of service to others. He would do anything in his power to help people make smarter choices in life and stay safe while having fun.

Caitlin

Mattawa, Ontario
imageHaving graduated from high school in 2008, Caitlin is now in her second year at Nipissing University studying Social Welfare and Development and Sociology. She enjoys reading, writing, watching movies and spending time with friends and family. After three years of involvement at her high school and as a returning member of the YAT, Caitlin joins the team this year as ‘Senior Member’. The issue of injury is important to Caitlin because she feels that there are too many young people in today’s society who are taking dangerous risks without thinking about the consequences. Caitlin knows that something as simple as wearing a helmet while biking or skating could be the difference between life and death, and appreciates the positive message that SMARTRISK offers: that there are many ways to have fun while reducing your chance of injury.

Jessica

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
imageJessica is a very busy grade 12 student, participating in activities ranging from aerobics classes to playing in bands; from tutoring at school to working part-time as a babysitter. She first joined her school’s SMARTRISK No Regrets team last year when a teacher at her school thought she would make a great student leader. Jessica finds it important to be active and stay involved, and she knows that getting injured clearly prevents or limits your ability to do this. Jessica experienced this frustration first hand when she broke her leg and was unable to attend some competitions, all because of a friend’s careless behaviour. For these reason and others, Jessica wants to spread the message of taking smart risks throughout her school and community.

Keith

Toronto, Ontario
imageKeith is currently in his 3rd year of a Medical Physics program at Ryerson University in Toronto. With eventual hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in computational physics, Keith is serving as the President of his programs Course Union and loves helping out and being a leader. He is also very fond of volunteering and travelling, and is proud to say he has almost been coast to coast across Canada. Keith is a returning member of the YAT, with positive memories from last year. The issue of injury is important to Keith because he has personally been involved in several motor vehicle incidents and by applying the SMARTRISK No Regrets message to his own life, he feels that he is now better able to manage the various risks that he encounters every day.

Kory

Leduc, Alberta

imageKory, who is passionate about many sports including volleyball and mountain biking, is in Grade 12 this year. He first heard about SMARTRISK from his guidance counselor who invited him to a No Regrets training session. Injury is a big issue for Kory as he loves being active and challenging himself – but doesn’t want to cross his own stupid line and have to pay the serious consequences. Kory applies the SMARTRISK No Regrets messages in his daily life and feels good about spreading the word around his school and community.

Maggie

Ferryland, Newfoundland

Maggie is in Grade 11 this year, with hopes to enter university in the near future and study something in the medical sciences such as pharmacy, ultrasound technology, or oncology. She enjoys sports, playing trumpet and French horn in her school band, and singing in her school choir. Maggie joined SMARTRISK last year when the program was brought to her school; she especially enjoyed the 700 faces initiative which she found to have a huge impact on her school community. The issue of injury is important to Maggie because it is so common and she has seen has often seen the consequences first hand. Maggie feels that many injuries are preventable and wishes to work to raise awareness of taking smart risks.
